DUI Arrest

Waukegan police stopped me and arrested me for DUI. What do I do now?

The Waukegan Police Department enforces Illinois laws against intoxicated motorists very aggressively. According to statistics from the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM), in 2008, the Waukegan Police Department arrested 438 people for DUI. That was the 5th highest number of arrests for DUI by any village in the state of Illinois for that year. Waukegan arrests more defendants for DUI than any other village in Lake County.

With only 157 officers, the department had a rate of 2.79 DUI arrests per officer in 2008. Considering many of the sworn officers from the department are detectives and other investigators who do not perform any DUI investigation, that is a very high number.

A first offense for DUI in Illinois classified as a Class A misdemeanor. This type of charge carries a sentencing range of up to one year in jail and a fine of $2,500. The defendant can be sentenced to probation and substance abuse treatment. In addition to the misdemeanor charge, a DUI has a summary suspension of your driver’s license for blowing over 0.08 or refusing to blow. A conviction for DUI in Illinois will cause the Secretary of State to impose a driver’s license revocation.

At present, all DUI offenses from the Waukegan police are prosecuted by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. The cases are assigned to courtroom 404 in the county courthouse at 18 N. County Street in Waukegan, but may be reassigned for hearings on motions and trials.

The Waukegan Police Department is located across the street from the courthouse at 420 Robert V. Sabonjian Place, which is basically on the west side of the courthouse on Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. The station has its own breathalyzer machine.
